Romanian ALCO classes and export versions

A collection of phots taken by myself, Ian Demaine and Mircea Dorobantu. (A special mention mention should go to Ian, he was the person who invited me to Romania, Ian sadly died with cancer at the age of 32). Also thanks go to Antonio Bianco, Neil Robinson and Romain Viellard for their assistance. 66.0001 photo from Rolf's ALCoWorld. (December 2001, with deepest sadness I hear of the death of Antonio Bianco also). A word document of location of the CFR ALCO's is here, can anyone update sightings please?

CFR Class 61
Only two class 61's were built, in 1984 and 1985 by Electroputere, both worked off Cluj Napoca, usually found on Expresses A421/422 between there and Satu Mare via Oradea. I've travelled on this train with 18 carriages! Initially we were under the impression only 61.0001 existed, only three years later someone saw 61.0002, these photos show 61.0001 on an International train to the Hungarian border, possible a very rare working, apparently due to being late off maintenance we were told. Both Locos are now out of use at Cluj Napoca. They had V12 ALCO engines, rated at 2640hp. Very well liked by the crew we spoke to because of the extra power.

CFR Class 64
There were seventeen class 64's built for CFR. But other locos of this type were also built for industrial companies, and they were class  LDE150 (Faur's commercial name for this loco). LDE 150.020 was still working on summer 1999, for the SUDAREC company (rail welding company), and could so be seen on the CFR network hauling works trains. It was painted the same as the CFR's 64. 64.0011 and 64.0012 were equipped for multiple and push-pull operation. The 64.0007 was equipped in Dej depot with a transversal coupling between the bogies, but never tested, because of the lack of batteries, it was withdrawn later. The 64 was fitted with ALCO license, 6 R 251 FLO, 6 cylinders in line. Power: 1521 hp. Top speed: 100 km/h. One was sold to Italy in 2003 as a contactors loco!

Prototype 060-DF-001
Test loco 060-DF-001 was a one off prototype fitted with thyristor control of the electric transmission. The loco was not a success and was scrapped in 1985.

CFR Class 66/67
The class 66 and 67 are really one class, the 66 being the freight version, the 67 being the passenger version. Little is known of their duties, though likely in the north east as some are there abandoned in depots. Though 66.0004 was seen active near Cluj Napoca in 1995. Fitted with a 3000 horsepower V12 ALCO engine. The 67's were fitted with Electric train heating for passenger use, and were certainly used for a while.

CFR Class 70/71
Like the 66/67, the class 70 and 71 are really one class, the 70 being the freight version, the 71 being the passenger version, they share the same number block. Fitted with a 4000 horsepower V16 ALCO engine. The 71's were fitted with Electric train heating for passenger use, and were possibly used for a while, however being the class were not in use for long due the high running costs of such a big locomotive.

The "Craiova's" as they were known in Greece finished in late 1990's by early 2001 they were all scrapped with exception of A-557, it does not have an engine, so unlikely ever to run again.
